How do I CHANGE THE WAY I USE RESOURCES... ?

There are many ways we can change the way we use resources.

First and foremost we need to look at the way we use these resources and find ways of reducing their use.

One of the main users of resources is the single home.

The ways we can start to change the way they use resources is from the very beginnings of the single home. In the way its location is planned, in the way it relates to where it is planned, in the materials it is constructed from and in the way it is designed - rather than sold to us.

If we can change these for the better we will make a great difference to the

If we change our WASTE HABITS and find ways to recycle we help increase sustainability.

How do I START SAVING RESOURCES... ?

Many Local Councils have implemented methods of recycling household waste - refer to your local council for details.

When it comes to buildings the question of saving resources is a complex one. It starts with the plot of dirt we contemplate using for the home and following on with the home we contemplate building.

Leaving the plot of dirt aside home builders should contemplate using trained professionals for their home building needs. By this we mean that home builders should not just have a look around at "what is available at the land/home package shop" they should ask who can provide the best advice - the builder, the draftsperson, the salesperson with their vested interest, or some other person with skills and training in the area?

If this criteria is analysed the choice should be a simple one - the trained and skilled professional.

Who is this person? The CHARTERED ARCHITECT. Why? Because the CHARTERED ARCHITECT is one of the few individuals who studies and is trained in areas relating to the ENVIRONMENT as well as being trained in the design and technology of building.

Not many other individuals are trained in these areas! Many may say they can do the same things - they cannot with the same degree of skill and unbiased expertise.

Why should I CONSERVE ENERGY... ?

In the future Energy Conservation will most probably become law and we will all have to take responsibility for conserving energy.

Australia is part of the Kyoto Accord.

And it makes a great deal of sense to save or natural resources!

And Energy Conservation is simple and saves YOU MONEY. Money which you can use for other things which you enjoy rather than for paying bills.

What is an ARCHITECT... ?

The term ARCHITECT is a legal phrase which in Australia refers to a trained and REGISTERED professional.

The TRAINING is usually undertaken in a recognised School of Architecture such as a University.

Having passed the examinations of a recognised School an individual can use the term ARCHITECT. That individual cannot practice the profession of ARCHITECTURE until such time as that individual gains REGISTRATION having gained adequate post-graduate experience under the guidance of a REGISTERED ARCHITECT.

REGISTRATION is by a legally constituted body such as a BOARD which recognises the level of qualification and experience attained by an individual. REGISTRATION is usually as a result of that individual satisfying examination requirements.

Having gained REGISTRATION that individual can practice ARCHITECTURE and is classified as a CHARTERED ARCHITECT.

What is a Designer... ?

A DESIGNER can be a CHARTERED ARCHITECT - most usually individuals calling themselves DESIGNERS are not CHARTERED ARCHITECTS.

A CHARTERED ARCHITECT would usually use the term ARCHITECT or CHARTERED ARCHITECT rather than Designer.

A DESIGNER is usually an individual who has not attended a recognised School of Architecture NOR undertaken any formal training in ARCHITECTURE.

A DESIGNER is usually DRAFTSPERSON - an individual who has obtained a drawing CERTIFICATE providing that individual with skills in drawing.

There are many type of DRAFTSPERSONS - In the fields of ENGINEERING, ARCHITECTURAL, SURVEYING to name but a few. These individuals have particular drawing knowledge in their chosen area of Surveying, Engineering.

They do NOT have the KNOWLEDGE nor QUALIFICATIONS of the professionals in their particular fields.

What is the difference between a CHARTERED ARCHITECT and a DESIGNER... ?

When the Architect is a registered individual and uses the term Designer there is no difference.

When the Designer is NOT a registered individual there is VAST DIFFERENCE in training, skill, knowledge and expertise between the two individuals using the terms.

The most significant difference is their skill and training in ARCHITECTURE.

What is ARCHITECTURE... ?

The dictionary definition of ARCHITECTURE is ...."Art or Science of Building".

Whilst the definition of ARCHITECT is ...."Professor of Building, who prepares plans and superintends work; designer of complex structure...."

What is COMPLEX STRUCTURE... ?

All buildings are COMPLEX STRUCTURE. From single homes to skyscrapers.

The popular misunderstanding is that a single home is not a COMPLEX STRUCTURE - it is.

Particularly as society becomes more complex and its needs become more complex the single home which proliferates our everyday lives becomes increasingly more complex.

The environmental and ecological degradation which is caused through the use of irreplaceable resources in the construction of single family homes, and in their use of irreplaceable energy resources is reaching a catastrophic level.

By and large individuals and their choices have caused this major problem. The proliferation of single homes which have not DESIGNED but which have been DRAWN has reached epidemic proportions. These single homes in most instances do not relate to environment, ecology nor meet the social needs of their occupants.

Similarly, they are not sustainable.

ARCHITECTS are usually blamed for their shortcomings. When in fact most single homes are not planned nor designed they are drawn to follow some marketing fad which has been established by SALES who have little regard for solving environmental nor ecological complexities.

What is SUSTAINABILITY... ?

The dictionary definition of SUSTAINABILITY is ..."Enable to last out, keep from failing, give strength to, encourage".

Do not be misled our natural resources are running out - at an alarming rate. If individuals do not change the way they consume them resources will not "last out", they will disappear.

Individuals need to "turn the tide of use of natural resources" in their everyday lives or it will be to late and our children will no longer have use of these natural resources - they will be left with the fruits of our labour!
