AccuRATE V1.1.3.0

The latest version of 2nd Gen BTP Assessment tools has been released.

DoP agree to a new Pilot to commence early February 2007.

BASIX (DIY) Review

ABSA instrumental in securing DoP DIY Sustainability Tool - DoP Review...not independent but a starting point

Visit the ABSA Site for further details.

DIY found to lower the standard of Residential Building BTP in NSW - varies between 200% to 400% below Simulation Method when compared with NatHERS and far more variation expected to AccuRATE.

ESD Construction

Building types by construction system

Each remote and suburban project designed by this practice evolves uniquely from its site, and clients development priorities.

As the number of completed projects grows, the environmental systems integrated and the construction approaches utilised find repeated applications.
Thereby ESD environmental approaches are integrated with conventional industry processes.
ESD systems are described separately.

Construction systems

Emphasis is placed on construction approaches which fulfil environmental goals.

Broadly these are:-

  1. Insulated light weight framed structures
  2. As above, but using pre-fabrication
  3. Mixed framed and masonry structures
  4. Hebel insulating masonry
  5. Masonry structures using a variety of materials

Outline

In hot arid lands, well insulated lightweight framed structures perform well with responsive the ESD systems used by this practice.

In timber framed structures, the opportunity arises to use recycled or plantation grown timbers. Occasionally on-site timber sources are part of the resource stock.

On many sites there is no suitable building material to hand, disturbance of the site would lead to long term environmental damage locally, and the transport cost of most materials choices is uniform.
Pre-fabrication off site and hand tool installation of lightweight steel structures on-site is attractive for its benefits of site protection during construction and resistance to pests.

Hebel is autoclave aerated concrete (AAC) which constructs as masonry block but with air inclusions forming insulation integral to the block contributes to comfort in buildings.

Some sites are suited to masonry structures, where the thermal mass assists the building to maintain comfort.
Few remote projects of this practice use conventional brick or brick veneer construction, those few noted here were developed with the clients understanding of the sub-optimum performance of that particular mix. The choice was driven by preferences for conventional appearance rather than environmental performance.

Projects can be designed with the use of environmental masonry solutions including site collected surface stone, rammed earth and mud brick.

Projects which mix these construction approaches, notably, pre-fabricated insulated building envelopes introducing thermal mass masonry elements can be designed to meet optimum ESD requirements.

There is no single general solution for any one circumstance when measured against environmental criteria alone, let alone when measured against a mix of requirements including client preference and social expectations (as imposed by builders, designers, sales and marketing staff and town planners in their ignorance).

The projects listed below simply show the possibilities of environmental solutions possible. This practice has designed effective ESD solutions using many of these distinct construction approaches.
